Assessment of the total business-system, mapping the human and computing aspects and their interactions to develop a system architecture for major change, such as a move into e-commerce.
Total-systems modelling describes the whole of a business system, including not only the human and information-technology aspects of the system, but also adaptations of the system to changes in individuals, required function and operating context. To do this, it merges:
- conventional function-modelling (work-flows, waterfall diagrams, etcetera)
- IT system-modelling (UML structure, deployment and other diagrams)
- modelling of work-flow and IT-system interactions (use-cases, CRC models, state-diagrams, etcetera)
- policy, procedure and work-instruction mapping (ISO-9000, HR diagrams)
- assessments of system resilience (skill-set maps, disaster-recovery analysis, scenario walk-throughs, etcetera)
Total-system modelling has two major applications:
- preparation for major change in the overall business-system, such as:
- move into e-commerce
- change of target market
- review and restructure of existing business-system with identified or suspected problems
Preparation for major change will usually include development of system requirements, and should include energy-dynamics modelling and appropriate adaptations of technology-of-mind educational models in order to increase system resilience. Restructure of existing business-systems would also include a systems-synthesis review in order to identify and resolve any conflicting covert-requirements embedded in the existing function of the overall system.
